Christmas can be a worrying time for many of us, so to help ease the worries, Pieta, the suicide and self-harm prevention charity, has pulled together some simple ways to help us all navigate the season with care and compassion.

On Christmas Day last year, Pieta, the suicide and self-harm prevention charity, received 70 calls and 142 texts from people contemplating suicide or self-harm to their 24/7 Crisis Helpline. Based on data from previous years, and a rise in calls over the past year, these numbers are likely to increase for Christmas 2024, with hundreds more seeking help during the festive season.

In response, Pieta asked their team of qualified mental health therapists, who work on their helpline, for some expert advice on some of the simple things we can all do to look after ourselves and navigate Christmas with care and compassion.

Verona Farrell, Pieta’s National Services Manager and a qualified psychotherapist says:
“Christmas is a time when many feel the pressure to be everything to everyone. However, it’s vital to prioritise your own mental and emotional wellbeing. By recognising your own needs and allowing yourself moments of rest, you can better support those around you and truly enjoy the season. It’s okay to step back, say no, and focus on your mental health - not just for you, but for those who care about you too.”

“Pieta’s therapists are available 24/7, even on Christmas Day. If you’re struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide, or grieving a loss, please reach out by calling our helpline. We are here for you.”

Pieta’s simple ways to navigate Christmas with care and compassion

  1. Be honest about money
Christmas can be expensive, even more so right now with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. But it's okay to tell your family and friends what you can afford. Suggest alternatives like Secret Santa or spending time together instead of exchanging gifts. Focus on making meaningful memories rather than stressing over your budget.

  2. Make space for grief
If you’ve lost someone this year, Christmas can be especially tough. It's normal to feel a range of emotions, from sadness to anger. Take time to reflect, start a new tradition in their memory, or share stories about them.

  3. Take time for yourself
The busy Christmas season can leave you feeling drained. It’s okay to say no to social events and carve out some time for rest. Whether it’s staying in to watch a favourite movie, or enjoying a quiet moment, looking after yourself is important.

  4. Keep hosting simple
If you’re hosting Christmas, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Ask guests to bring a dish, or try a simpler meal to save time and money.

  5. Tackle loneliness
Spending Christmas alone can be tough, but there are ways to make it easier. Plan your day around things you enjoy, like a walk, a favourite meal, or a chat with friends. If you’re feeling isolated, think about joining a community event or reaching out to someone you trust. You don’t have to face it alone.

  6. Get support if you need it
If you're struggling this Christmas, it’s okay to ask for help. Pieta’s Crisis Helpline is available 24/7, even on Christmas day, with our team of qualified therapists offering round-the-clock support if you are thinking of self-harming, suicide, or have lost someone to suicide. Call 1800 247 247, or text ‘HELP’ to 51444.

Pieta’s 24/7 Crisis Helpline remains open every day of the year, including Christmas, ensuring that no one has to face their struggles alone. While many services close over the holidays, Pieta’s team is always available to offer immediate support to those in crisis and their loved ones.

Show your support for Pieta this Christmas

To support Pieta in preventing suicide and self-harm, long-time Pieta supporter and entrepreneur Louise Cooney is hosting an online Christmas raffle to raise funds for the charity. Participants will have a chance to win incredible prizes, such as €1,000 One4All vouchers, with all proceeds benefiting Pieta’s services. Tickets are available through Louise’s iDonate page, starting at just €5. The raffle will run throughout December, leading up to Christmas.

Louise says: “It’s heartbreaking that so many people struggle at Christmas. By sharing Pieta’s advice and letting others know that help is available 24/7 through Pieta’s helpline, we can support those who need help. Hosting this raffle is my way of giving back and encouraging others to do the same. Having lost a family member to suicide, I am deeply grateful for the support Pieta provides to families across Ireland.”

Whether as an individual, business, or community group, your support this Christmas can help Pieta prevent suicide and self-harm. You can make a donation, participate in Louise’s Christmas raffle, or get involved in many other ways. Visit pieta.ie to see what you can do.
