Self-Harm Awareness Day is on Saturday 1st March, and Pieta is urging everyone to learn more about self-harm and support those who are affected.
Nearly half the people who reach out for support from our therapy services are dealing with self-harm - most of them under 25.
Recent data shows that self-harm is most common among young people, especially girls aged 15 to 19 and boys aged 20 to 24. While self-harm may be a way to cope with overwhelming emotional pain, it can also be dangerous and even lead to accidental death or suicidal thoughts.
Stephanie Manahan, Chief Executive Officer at Pieta, explains, “Understanding self-harm is the first step in offering meaningful support. By noticing the signs and reaching out with empathy, we can help people find healthier ways to cope. Whether you’re struggling yourself or see someone else in distress, know that help is available through our free therapy services and support.”
What to look for:
If you’re worried that someone might be self-harming, keep an eye out for these signs:
Physical signs: Unexplained cuts, bruises, or burns on areas like the wrists, arms, thighs, or chest. They might even wear long sleeves or trousers in warm weather to hide injuries.
Behavioural changes: Pulling away from friends and social activities, spending more time alone, or losing interest in activities they once enjoyed. They may also become unusually secretive about their body.
Emotional signals: Comments or behaviours that suggest low self-esteem, self-blame, or self-loathing, along with a sense of deserving punishment.
Mood changes: Prolonged sadness, frequent crying, low energy, or a lack of motivation. They might talk about feeling like a failure or express hopelessness.
If you notice any of these signs, try to start a calm, caring conversation. Listen without judging, and encourage them to seek professional help.
