Charlie Bird will be remembered throughout Ireland as a man who always put others first. He has had a huge impact on everyone at Pieta, and we feel honoured he chose to support our work through his incredible fundraising efforts during the years of his illness.
This page highlights the many memories we have of Charlie and his contribution to Pieta as a charity, which will never be forgotten.
Climb with Charlie
On Saturday, 2nd of April Charlie climbed Croagh Patrick – to signify the vast mountains people face every day with their physical and mental health. Thousands around Ireland braved the weather to climb in their local area in support of Charlie, Pieta and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. Over €3 million was raised. The initiative started small, but Charlie’s determination and effort turned it into something bigger than we could have ever imagined.
The funds raised helped us set up The Charlie Bird Crisis Intervention Fund to support people experiencing suicidal thoughts.

Our Swords Opening
Pieta’s new centre in Swords has a room proudly named after Charlie – where he will always be remembered for the effort and time he gave to supporting people who need it most.
Supporting the LGBTQ+ Community
Charlie played a huge role in helping to raise funds for our BeLong To crisis counselling service for LGBTQ+ young people. He kindly donated all proceeds from his beautiful book ‘A Day in May: Real Lives, True Stories’ to Pieta. The book was later turned into a documentary play by Colin Murphy, also raising funds for Pieta and IMNDA.
Thank you Charlie! For all you have done for the people of Ireland, and for us here at Pieta. We will never forget your kindness and courage, may you rest in peace.
